l would like to answer some of the most sought out questıons concerning yoga. These include: “Can I breathe the rıght way?” and “How should I breathe?” and also “Why should we breathe in through the nose and breathe out through the nose?”
As we know, the nose is one of our respiratory organs. The nose is designed to help us breathe safely, efficiently, and properly. The nose filters out foreign particles. Nasal hairs filters out dust, allergens, and pollen, which helps prevent them from entering your lungs.
The nose warms and moisturizes the air you breathe in, humidifying the inhaled air. This brings the air respirations to body temperature, making it easier for the lungs to use.
During nasal breathing, the nose releases nitric oxide (NO). NO is a vasodilator, which means it helps to widen blood vessels. This can help improve oxygen circulation in your body.
“Why should you breathe out through the nose?”
The powdered partıculants ın the aır attach to the haırs in the nose when breathıng out. Also there is a greater loss of moısture and lıquıd in our body, when we breathe out from the mouth.
“How do you know if you are breathıng correctly and you are healthy?”
If the number of breaths you take is below 8 ın a mınute; If your breathıng is sound, deep and steady; and if you breathe by usıng dıaphragmatic breaths.
The diaphragm is the main muscle used for breathing. It’s the dome-shaped muscle found below your lungs, separating your chest cavity from your abdominal cavity. Its up-and-down movement helps the lungs contract and expand.
If we use the dıaphragm muscle, while breathıng in and out, the respıratory system will ıncrease in capacity.
The abdominal area will expand with each inhalation and contract with each exhalation. We can also feel our own ribs expand to the front, sides, and back with each inhalation.
Relearning how to breathe from the diaphragm is beneficial for everyone. Diaphragmatic breathing encourages full oxygen exchange — that is, the beneficial trade of incoming oxygen for outgoing carbon dioxide. Not surprisingly, this type of breathing slows the heartbeat and can lower or stabilize blood pressure. When we have stress, or during meditation time, we are focusing on the correct breathing.
Now my student will show you correct diaphragmatic breathing.
When breathing in through our nose, the belly swells, and breathing out our nose, the belly descending. You should inhale until your belly is swollen and breathe out all the way toward your back.
In some yoga poses, you may only have diaphragm breathing (belly breathing). You won’t take a full lung breath! Because of that You can feel the diaphragm breathing more, while staying in these yoga poses.
For example, the child's pose (balasana). When you are in the child’s pose, you will have full breathing. However, in Sphinx pose (Salamba Bhujangasana) you will only be able to do diaphragmatic breathing.
At the same time, if you put your legs against the wall and lift them up and put your hand on your belly, using only your diaphragm to breathe, you can observe your dıaphragm muscle and dıaphragmatic breathing better.
With yoga breathing exercises, you can expand your diaphragm muscles and take more oxygen into your body with your breath. This will increase your inner peace, lower your daily stress, and improve your overall health.
